The 2022 International Peace Day celebrations has ended in cross River with a call for the domestication of the global peace mantra in the country,.
Speaking in Calabar in a special ceremony organised by the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star(BCS) in conjunction with the United Nations, the Spiritual Leader of the Organization, Leader Olumba Olumba Obu, stated that the desire for peace cuts across racial and ethnic boundaries.
He noted that “if there has been a time which the country requires peace most , such a time is now given the high rate of reported cases of kidnapping, banditry ,and large scale communal clashes that have led to unfortunate lost of prescious lives”.
Leader Obu, said”we are heading into elections and given our impatience to imbibe the culture of the winner being magnanimous and the loser playing the role of a sportsman by accepting defeat with humility ,there are bound to be cases of skirmish es and our political leaders should initiate proactive measures to ward off whatever man made conflicts may arise”.
He observed that experience has shown that no meaningful progress can be achieved where conflicts thrive, hence the need for peace to be given so that the little efforts achieved in our March toward nationhood could be preserved and built upon for the benefits generations yet unborn.
In an interactive session with media men after the World Peace Day celebrations, the spokesperson of the Brotherhood of the cross and Star, Christ Shepherd Archibong Edet commended the media for their role in conflicts resolution and urged them not rest on their oars, as a lot still requires to be done.
He pointed out that the choice of the theme “Give peace a chance” for the celebration could not have been more appropriate given our daily experience on reports of conflicts across the country.
The chairman of the Nigeria union of journalists NUJ, Cross River Council, Comradw, Nsa Gill also collaborated the importance of the celebrations stressing that peace is an essential incredient for peace and development in the country.
