In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on residents during the yuletide, the Councillor representing Ward 12 in Calabar South Local Government Area, Hon. Chief Moses Eyo, has approved the suspension of all daily market tolls and ticket payments across the ward throughout the festive season.
The intervention, undertaken in collaboration with key stakeholders in the ward, is designed to complement the people-oriented policies of the Governor of Cross River State, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, particularly in cushioning the economic pressures faced by low-income earners.
“Under the arrangement, he said, traders operating in markets within Ward 12 will not be required to pay daily tolls or tickets for the duration of the festivities. In addition, commercial bus and taxi operators plying routes within the ward have been exempted from remitting the usual loading fees and daily transport tickets”.
Speaking on the initiative, Hon. Eyo said the decision was informed by the need to support petty traders and transport operators who often struggle with rising living costs, especially during the festive period.
According to him, “the temporary relief will enable beneficiaries to maximise their earnings, meet family obligations and celebrate the season with less financial strain”.
Residents and transport operators in the ward have welcomed the development, describing it as timely and a clear demonstration of grassroots-focused leadership.
