Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening maritime security and driving economic growth, particularly through enhanced collaboration with the Nigerian Navy.
He made this assurance while receiving the newly appointed Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory, Commodore Ajumobi Oride, at the Dan Archibong Lodge, the temporary office of the Governor.
Welcoming Commodore Oride, Governor Otu commended the Nigerian Navy’s critical role in securing the state’s waterways, particularly in protecting fishing communities and combating maritime crimes.
He acknowledged the Navy’s relentless efforts in ensuring peace along the coastline, which has significantly boosted economic activities, especially in the fishing sector.
The Governor emphasized that the Navy’s patrol operations have been instrumental in securing key coastal areas, particularly in relation to the Bakassi Deep Sea Port project.
He reaffirmed the port’s strategic importance to Cross River’s economic future and assured the government’s continued support for its successful realization.
Recognizing the operational challenges faced by the Nigerian Navy, Governor Otu pledged continued assistance, including the provision of additional resources to enhance security efforts.
He highlighted the recent procurement of two patrol boats and assured that more support—including housing and logistical aid—would be considered to further fortify maritime security.
“The presence of the Navy in our waters has not only improved security but has also given our people, especially our fishermen, the confidence to conduct their businesses without fear.
This is the kind of synergy we must continue to foster for the economic growth of Cross River State,” the Governor stated.
He further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting naval operations, particularly through fuel and lubricant provisions to sustain patrol efforts.
In his remarks, Commodore Ajumobi Oride expressed appreciation for the state government’s ongoing support and its role in enhancing naval operations.
“The support of the state government has been instrumental in enabling our operations, particularly through the provision of vehicles and critical logistical assistance. My predecessor spoke highly of the unwavering collaboration between NNS Victory and the state government, and I am pleased to see this strong partnership continue.
The Nigerian Navy remains committed to safeguarding our territorial waters and ensuring maritime security,” Commodore Oride stated.
He noted that increased naval presence has already led to a resurgence in fishing activities, as fishermen feel safer operating along the waterways.
The NNS Victory Commander also provided updates on recent surveying operations around the Calabar Channel, emphasizing the Navy’s dedication to ensuring safe and efficient navigation for vessels, particularly in preparation for the Bakassi Deep Sea Port.
However, Commodore Oride highlighted the need for additional resources to sustain operations, particularly more patrol boats and an increased fuel supply to expand security coverage in shallow waters.
He assured the Governor of the Navy’s continued collaboration with other security agencies to combat criminal activities such as kidnapping and illegal maritime operations.
Governor Otu’s renewed commitment to maritime security and economic expansion underscores the critical role of inter-agency collaboration in driving Cross River’s development agenda. As the state continues to explore its blue economy potential, enhanced security measures will be pivotal in attracting investments and boosting commercial activities along the coastline.
