Preparations are underway for the second edition of the Agbokim Falls Green Marathon, scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
Organizers say this year’s event will continue its focus on sports, tourism, and environmental conservation in Cross River State.
At a technical meeting held in Calabar with the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Agnes Atsu, and other stakeholders, spokesperson for the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Mr. Emem Udominyang, confirmed the date after what he described as “extensive consultations” with sports and environmental experts.
Udominyang said the marathon’s theme emphasizes the connection between athletics and environmental responsibility, adding that it was designed to draw attention to reforestation and conservation efforts in the state.
“The marathon is not just about competition,” he noted. “It is also a way to raise awareness about preserving our natural environment and promoting sustainable tourism.”
According to the LOC, the 2025 edition will include a 42km full marathon, a 21km half marathon, and a 10km children’s race. The routes will pass through the Agbokim Falls area, known for its natural scenery.
Udominyang acknowledged the role of the state government and other partners in supporting the event, describing it as a growing platform for community engagement and local economic activity.
Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Agnes Atsu, welcomed the plans for the marathon, saying it aligns with the government’s agenda to use sports for youth development and tourism promotion.
She said the ministry would work with organizers to ensure proper coordination and athlete development ahead of the event.
First held in 2024, the Agbokim Falls Green Marathon has become part of the state’s broader effort to promote both fitness and environmental awareness, while drawing attention to Cross River’s unique ecological landscape.
