Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming sports, particularly golf, into a key driver of economic growth, tourism, and investment in the state.
Speaking at the Calabar Golf and Business Tournament held in his honour on Saturday, Governor Otu described the initiative as a blend of leisure, business, and development, pledging sustained support for sports as an economic venture rather than mere recreation.
“Sports today is business. We are encouraging our youths to participate because it opens opportunities. Anybody who wins a trophy here is always celebrated, and that’s part of the motivation,” the governor said.
Governor Otu expressed optimism that the tournament would position Cross River as a premier sports tourism destination in Africa.
“We are promoting this place as a tourist destination. It has massive potential in Africa, and we are looking to upscale it in the coming days,” he noted.
He further hinted at plans to expand golf beyond Calabar to other parts of the state and beyond, adding that by 2031, golf would become one of Cross River’s flagship sports.
The tournament received strong backing from the First Bank of Nigeria, a key private sector partner in the event.
The Group CEO of First Bank, Mr. Olusegun Alebiosu, reaffirmed the bank’s long-standing support for sports development in Nigeria, describing golf as a sport that reflects the values of business, health, and endurance.
“First Bank is proud to be here in Calabar for this tournament,” Alebiosu said. “We’ve supported golf for decades because we believe golf represents business, health, and life itself.”
He assured continued partnership with the Cross River State Government to expand the tournament in future editions, emphasizing the bank’s century-long relationship with the state.
Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Michael Odere, who led the organizing committee, highlighted that the event was designed to use golf as a platform for networking and investment.
“This is not just about tourism or culture; it’s about creating a platform for business, leisure, entertainment, and health,” Odere explained. “It allows investors to interact directly with government officials in a relaxed environment.”
Capping off a competitive event that drew 80 golfers from over ten states, the tournament crowned its champions. Leading the pack was Overall Winner Fidel Udie.
The other category victories were claimed by Bassey Nkposong for Best Net, PK Bello in the Veterans Category, and Gladness Dan in the Ladies Category. Rounding out the major winners were Ray Ovat in Division 1 and Michael Odere in Division 2.
