A ship captain, Edet Effiong Uliong, has said that Nigeria continues to attract growing interest from foreign nationals despite prevailing economic hardship and rising inflation in the country.
Uliong made the observation while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the silver jubilee celebration of the coronation of Olumba Olumba Obu in Calabar.
He noted that in several countries he has visited, many individuals have expressed a strong desire to explore business and trade opportunities in Nigeria, describing the trend as both surprising and encouraging.
“Whereas we are supposed to be running away from Nigeria, many people are instead eager to come,” he said, adding that he is aware of individuals in the United States already ordering goods from Nigeria.
Drawing from his experience as a professional mariner, Uliong expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic outlook, stating that the country’s fortunes could improve in the near future.
He also stressed the need for stronger unity among African nations, urging the continent to consolidate its gains in the aftermath of historical challenges.
Describing the transatlantic slave trade as one of the greatest injustices against Africans, Uliong said unity remains critical to overcoming present challenges and securing a better future for the continent.
“With unity, Africans can overcome the odds and chart a new course for the continent,” he said.
The cleric further called on African leaders, particularly in Nigeria, to embrace humility and adopt a servant-leadership approach to governance.
According to him, leaders must prioritise the welfare of citizens and govern with a sense of responsibility, guided by the principle of “live and let’s live.”
