A University of Calabar Students’ Union Government welfare officwe Comr. Omini Sophia, has renovated two separate apartments in halls eight and six out of the hostels destroyed by fire over two years ago.
When our reporter visited the said apartments, the renovation was already 100% completed with new electrical connections, bulbs, fan and curtains
.Others includes, furnitures, carpet, and wardrobes which are fully installed.
In an interview, the Director of Welfare, Comr. Omini said the renovation exercise was part of his campaign promises made to Nigerian students while seeking their mandate.
He explained that since the apartments were razed down by fire, sometime in 2018, no students’ administration had thought it wise to carry out repair works on the affected hostels.
Omini, a native of Mkpani in Yakurr Local government area and fourth year level student of Science Laboratory Technology, Faculty of Biological Sciences noted that his motive was to shelter students, especially those of the first year level who have nowhere to live, at least for the time being before the school authority should give them out to their respective legal occupants.
While lauding the school authorities for giving the approval for him to undertake the project, he said his motivation came from the Vice Chancellor’s uncompromising commitment in the area of infrastructure.
However he said, “i only wanted to tow the path of the V.C, Prof. Zana I. Akpagu, a man he described as “all Time Best Welfare Oriented” vice chancellor of the university.
He also commended the school’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Enang Udah for his continuous support to students’ wellbeing.
He that the project was funded from his personal effort.
