University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Calabar campus has been locked following a protest by occupants of female hostel over frequent robbery of students in recent times.

The early hours protest started in the female hostel through the main gate where other male students joined chanting “Our girls deserve better security”.

“One of the male protesters said, “The girls are angry, and feel insecure in the hostels.”

Sources revealed that robbery in UNICROSS Calabar campus is now a normal thing and the school management and Cross River government pays less concern about the insecurity in the campus.

“It is obvious we need well trained and qualified securities in the Campus especially in ETF, Staff Quarters, Male & Female hostels, he complained”.

Another student who pleaded anonymity disclosed that Hall 2 of female hostel was robbed last night and a large number of phones were carted away by hoodlums, stressing that if hoodlums can operate inside the hostel without any interference from any security personnel, then their lives isn’t save.

They appealed to the school management to act fast to put an end to this upraising.

Recalled that last year, UNICROSS graduate awaiting clearance for Youth service was allegedly stabbed to death while trying to retrieve a stolen phone from a gang who robbed a female student at night. He accosted the gang and got stabbed multiple times while left to die in a pool of his blood.

As at the time of filling the story, efforts to get the management speak on the issue proved abortive.

Our Reporter who was at the scene report that the gate was sealed with presence of security men everywhere.
