The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Egbe Ayuk, has stated that the State government is repositioning the emergency response architecture to address the threat of new variants of COVID-19.
Ayuk stated this at the State Public Health Emergency Operation Centre, Calabar, while on a facility inspection, recently.
He expounded government’s determination to upgrade the centre to contend any virus.
In his words: “although no case of such variants has been detected in Nigeria, we will ensure our rapid response system is beefed up to respond to any emerging challenge”.
“As part of the restructuring, the Public Health Emergency Operation Centre (PHEOC) Pillar leads will be reconstituted and expanded to broaden scope of operations of the centre.”
The Commissioner also expressed excitement at the sheer commitment and enthusiasm of the staff unit, assured them of speedy attention to the challenges raised.
The State epidemiologist, Dr. Inyang Ekpeyong who had earlier led the Commissioner round the facility, lamented the decay of some vital equipment and inadequate space for its operations and solicited for urgent government intervention.
