A four time National Women Table Tennis Championship, Offiong Edim has appealed to Cross Riverians and Nigerians at large to help promote and sponsor Table Tennis game in the country.
Edim started this when she paid a courtesy call on the State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) Comrade Archibong Bassey, at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar.
Edim who is also a five times Olympian stated that most of the challenges to the advancement of Table Tennis in the country was lack of sponsorship and funds.
Therefore she called on good spirited individuals as well as corporate organizations to come to the aid by supporting the table tennis sponsorship.
According to her “support and financial backings for Table Tennis will take the game to higher dimension in the country.
The athlete decried a situation where individuals solicit for funds for International Competition and called for a redress.
She pointed out that sponsorship from Ministry of Sports only comes during major international events and recalled an instance where a female player was asked to withdraw from a global tournament for inability to secure air space.
Earlier, the NUJ Chairman Comrade Archibong Bassey, lauded the passion in her for nurturing young talents who will succeed her in the future and called on parents to encourage their children and wards to have passion for sports and education.
