Special Adviser to the Governor of Cross River State on Non-Indigenes Affairs, Mazi Okey Maduekwe has visited the scene of the recent fire disaster at Akim timber market and Upper Goldie to sympathize with victims.
Mazi Maduekwe was conducted round the scene by Leaders of Association of Calabar Traders and Timber Dealers association.
Speaking after the inspection, Maduekwe described the incidence as a total devastation that have greatly affected the traders and the state.
He expressed dissatisfaction that property worth millions of Naira were gutted by fire in both timber markets. It is a huge loss to both the traders and the state.
However, he sympathized with the victims and encouraged them to be “proactive and safety conscious” always to avoid future occurrence.
He reassured them that Government will continue to do its best to create enabling environment for business to blossom in the state.
He promised to call the attention of the state governor His Excellency, Dr. Sen. Bassey Edet Otu by submitting a vivid account of the fire incident.
Earlier, the leadership of the two associations, had applauded the Special Adviser to the governor on Non-indigenes Affairs Mazi Okey Maduekwe for embarking on the on-the-spot assessment of the recent fire outbreak at Akim timber market and Goldie axis.
This is an indication that this government is responsive and caring and is capable of assisting in other to restore hope amongst the victims who have lost goods worth several millions of Naira during the fire.
According to them, “this visit is timely and laudable. We are right now helpless. We need government assistance and support to restart our businesses”.
The delegation was led by Barr. Asuquo Ita, President, Association of Calabar Traders and Elder David Essien, Timber Dealer Association.
