As part of efforts to forge integration and support efforts at social security, the chairman of Bakassi local government, Hon. Effiong Etim Okon has undertaken familiarization visit to the Nigerian Navy Unit stationed in the estuary settlement of the local government area known among the people as Day Spring.
The Bakassi chairman was accompanied during the visit to the area by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security South, Navy Commander Patrick Odiong (Retired) and some members of the local government security outfit.
He said the visit became important to create in the Navy, a sense of belonging and presented bags of rice and other logistics to cushion their stay in the new naval unit.
According to the chairman, there had long been agitation for a Naval forward operation base to the area and described the effort of the state government as a welcome development.
The Bakassi Chairman and his team also inspected on-going progress of work at the construction site of a health center, town hall and a solar borehole, a project initiative of Bakassi local government in the area.
Speaking, the chairman, Hon. Effiong Etim Okon urged the contractor to expedite action on the work especially with the presence of the navy in the area.
Over 50 of fishing settlements are found in the area which stretches along the Akpayefe Estruary, the Qua River Estruary, the Calabar River Estruary and the Cross River Estruary giving rise to the name Day Spring for the volume of aquatic, oil and gas resources found in the area.
The presence of the Nigerian Navy in the area is a welcome development to shape security of lives and property against cases of incursion by militants, pirates and kidnappers.
