The Obidient Movement (TOM) in Cross River State has raised concerns regarding the internal processes leading up to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship primaries, urging party leadership to ensure maximum transparency and respect for the state’s established zoning structure.

In a press statement issued on Friday in Calabar, the group highlighted the importance of maintaining the longstanding political understanding that reserves the governorship position for the Southern Senatorial District.
According to TOM, the current framework, which has guided Cross River politics since 1999, faces potential disruption. The group noted that an aspirant from the Northern Senatorial District is currently participating in the race, which they argue departs from the agreed rotation.

Beyond the zoning debate, the movement called for improved internal communication from the state party secretariat.
They pointed out that a lack of official updates has left aspirants and stakeholders overly reliant on informal channels and speculation regarding primary preparations.
TOM emphasized that a more inclusive approach is necessary to prevent any perception of “secret primaries,” ensuring that delegates, aspirants, and party faithful are fully informed and involved in every stage of the process.
The statement also touched upon a recent visit by a delegation from the party’s national leadership. TOM expressed disappointment with the engagement, suggesting that the committee appeared to operate with pre-determined positions rather than fostering an open dialogue with local stakeholders.
The movement warned that a lack of clear communication and deviation from established zoning principles could create unnecessary internal friction, potentially impacting the party’s cohesion and prospects in upcoming elections.
TOM clarified that the press statement was intended as a constructive appeal to the national leadership, party members, and the public to address these procedural gaps early.
