The Executive chairman of Yakurr local government area, Hon. Ofem Ebri Obeten has intervened in what could have resulted to a bloodshed between Ugep and Idomi communities of Yakurr.
Trouble started as a result of the death of an Ugep trader (name; withheld), , who was allegedly killed along Idomi axis of the Ugep/Idomi boundary road while returning from Idomi.
An eyewitness account said, the deceased man went to Idomi to make supply of his goods [cement] when he met his sudden death on his way back to Ugep.
Provoked by this ugly development , youths of Ugep community, particularly from the deceased quarters mobilized themselves for a retaliation , but not for the prompt response of the Council Chairman.
The Chairman, upon receiving the report, jumped into action by ordering the immediate removal of the corpse and its deposition at a mortuary.
Patriot News revealled that Hon. Ofem did not waste anytime before alerting the Police Area Command (PAC) and the Ugep Divisional Police Officer (DPO) into action to avert possible bloodshed.
It was further gathered that the chairman also mobilized the local neighborhood watch (the vigilante) to assist the conventional security in its operation to ensuring no casualty was recorded.
Confirming the story , Hon. Obeten said that he had also commissioned the police to “carry out a thorough investigation on the matter.
He appealed to the people of Ugep to exercise some patience as the cause of the death would be revealed soonest, while advising that any attempt to take laws into their hands would be resisted with a strong force.
Ofem assured residents of the community to go about their normal businesses with peace of heart as their security and that of all Yakurr residents is a top priority of his administration.
