The Chairman of Akpabuyo local government council in Cross River, Hon. Emmanuel Offiong Bassey, has taken the dividend of democracy down to his constituency as hundreds of people in his immediate domain benefitted from his empowerment and capacity building programme.
Speaking at the occasion, the Chairman said, “I am not doing this because I am two rich or the council is too rich, but it is because as a leader, I should be able to share in the problems of our people hence this empowerment today”.
He assured the people that this is just the beginning and promised to take on another group as soon as I can access funds.
The beneficiaries which cuts across the 10 council wards in the area went home with #200,00 (two Hundred Thousand Naira) each.
Bassey while handing over the cash to the beneficiaries advised them to make judicious use of the money and not to see it as a free donation so that he would be encouraged to do more as soon as there is money.
He maintained that it is only when the money is used judiciously that more development will enter the local government.
He declared, “if all of you who have benefited now can put the money into small businesses in your various wards, then you can bring development to your wards because of the multiplier effects”.
The chairman also added that he was “doing this to compliment what the governor of the state, His Excellency Prof. Ben Ayede who is so passionate about the plight of the people of this state hence, the policy which we have never had by successive administrations in this state”.
According to him, “five people per polling unit are paid the sum of N30, 000 (Thirty Thousand Naira), coupled with appointments of about eight thousand Cross Riverians”
He noted that it could not have been better than this. What i have done is to compliment this gesture by our leader who is leading by example.
It would be recalled that about two weeks ago, the wife of the chairman, Mrs. Eyoawan Offiong Bassey also empowered over thirty woman in Okon Oyom market with over three hundred thousand naira to boost their petty businesses.
Thereafter, followed by the chairman’s gesture with over two million Naira involved.
Speaking, one of the beneficiaries who was a councillorship aspirant from Atimbo East ward in the last local government election, who spoke on behalf of others, Mr Patrick Eyo Etim, thanked the chairman for his wonderful gesture and promised that they would make judicious use of the money they were given so as to encourage the council chairman to do same or even more to others for the development of Akpabuyo.
Among those that were empowered includes a physically challenged person, and a woman.
