The Commissioner for Health Cross River state, Dr Henry Egbe Ayuk, has said that the prevalence of HIV/Aids in the state could be traced to uncontrollable influx of people from neighbouring countries and states around.
He mentioned some of the country as Cameron, Benue and Akwa Ibom states.
Ayuk made this observation while briefing media men and health partners in the state ahead of the celebration of World AIDS Day in his office.
According to him, “HIV Data show that the epicenters of HIV are in local communities next to Cameroon where people there are pockets of unchecked movements in Cross River state”.
“There are such places in neighbouring states like in Obaliku local government area which is next to Benue State. There are such places, too, next to Akwa Ibom State and other nearby states.”
“HIV prevalence in the state which has reduced from 12 per cent to two per cent is mostly in borderline communities, he added”.
He further said that the state has met over 70% of HIV expectation, adding that this is on the average but we record deaths on daily basis.
He said that during the World AIDs day celebration which has the theme: “Communities – Leadership To End AIDs By 2030″‘, we will continue with mass testing and community sensitization.
In his contribution, the Permanent Secretary, Dr Etim Ayi called for minimization of the unrestricted infiltrations in order to avert new HIV cases in the state.
He emphasized importance of community involvements, saying this is very necessary.
Also speaking, Interim chairman of State Action Committee For AIDs, SACA, Dr Paul Odey said they need all amount of supports from leaders, communities, Faith based organizations and Stakeholders to stem the HIV tides in the state.
The World Aids Day will be marked with a number of activities lined up. These include, World AIDS Day Walk and Opening of Xmas Village by the state governor, Sen Bassey Otu.
Her Excellency, Rev. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu shall present prizes to winners of Calabar Children marathon.
There shall be COVID-19/hepatitis/TN/ Malaria/HIV counseling and testing, condom distribution and demonstration as well as Wise Up Campaign.
